Here in Fort Worth, we are experiencing record-breaking low temperatures and snow storms. Many of my friends and professors are without power and water. I am hearing similar stories from my friends in Austin who can no longer reside in their buildings because they have lost power, and temperatures inside their rooms are dropping below 40°. My thoughts are with all those without these utilities, and who are struggling to find a place to shower, pick up food, or spend the night. Below are some important local resources and safety announcements from the City of Fort Worth that may offer guidance and help.
North and west Fort Worth residents are being advised to boil water before cooking or consumption, due to a loss of system pressure. Boiling the water before usage will ensure that it will be free of all harmful bacteria or contaminants. Drinking contaminant-free water is especially critical for young children, elderly individuals, or those with compromised immune systems. This notice has also been extended to parts Austin and San Antonio. The city is working to supply water bottles for those without access to water or the capability to boil their own. Select fire stations, schools, and breweries are acting as water-bottle distribution points for Fort Worth residents. The Fort Worth Convention center has been opened to act as a shelter for those without power or a warm place to spend the night. Restroom access, cots, and Covid-19 screening will be provided. After the morning of Friday the 19th, shelter options will be shifted to other locations. Warming stations are also available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m Tuesday-Thursday. To all those struggling without power and water in this storm, please stay safe, and take care of one another— know that you that you are not alone, and remember that there are warmer days are ahead!
